How long does a concrete project take?

There is no single timeline that applies to every concrete project. Project size, demolition, excavation, site access, drainage, reinforcement, weather, finish type, and curing requirements can all affect the schedule. After reviewing the site and scope of work, the contractor should be able to give you a much more realistic project timeline.

How long does concrete take to cure?

Concrete begins hardening soon after it is placed, but it continues gaining strength for weeks. The industry commonly uses 28-day compressive strength as a standard reference point for evaluating concrete strength. When a new slab can safely handle foot traffic, vehicles, or heavier loads depends on the concrete mixture, weather conditions, slab design, and intended use, so follow the instructions provided for your specific project.

Does concrete crack?

Concrete can crack. As concrete hardens and loses moisture, it naturally shrinks, and temperature changes, settlement, loading, and site conditions can also contribute to cracking. Proper preparation and strategically placed contraction joints help control where shrinkage cracks occur, but no reputable contractor should promise that concrete will never crack.

What are the lines or joints in a concrete slab for?

Many of the lines you see in driveways, patios, and other slabs are intentional contraction joints. They create planned weakened locations so normal shrinkage movement is more likely to produce a crack beneath the joint rather than randomly across the visible surface. Isolation joints may also be used where concrete meets structures or other slabs so the different sections can move independently.

What should I look for when choosing a concrete contractor?

Look beyond the finished photos. Ask about site preparation, drainage, concrete thickness, joint placement, reinforcement when applicable, curing, finishing methods, and how the contractor handles unexpected site conditions. A good contractor should be able to explain why the project is being built a certain way rather than simply telling you what the finished surface will look like.

Why is site preparation important?

The concrete itself is only one part of the finished system. Soil conditions, base preparation, grading, drainage, slab design, and joint placement all influence long-term performance. Problems beneath a slab can eventually show up above it as settlement, movement, or cracking.

Exposed aggregate provides more visible stone and a decorative appearance, while stamped concrete can reproduce the look of stone, slate, brick, and other patterns. The best choice depends on the appearance, traction, maintenance, and overall style you want for the property.

What is a broom-finish concrete driveway?

A broom finish is created by dragging a broom across the concrete while the surface is still workable. This leaves a uniform textured pattern rather than a completely smooth surface. Brooming is commonly used on exterior concrete because surface texture helps improve skid resistance.

Can an old concrete driveway be repaired instead of replaced?

Sometimes. An isolated crack, damaged joint, or localized surface problem may be repairable. Widespread cracking, substantial settlement, movement between slabs, severe deterioration, or problems with the underlying base can make replacement a more appropriate long-term solution. The cause of the damage matters more than simply the size of the visible crack.

Why do concrete driveways become uneven?

Does stamped concrete need to be sealed?

Sealer is commonly used on stamped concrete to help protect the surface from moisture, stains, abrasion, and fading while also enhancing the decorative color. Sealers wear over time, so stamped concrete may eventually need to be resealed. How often depends on the sealer, traffic, weather, and exposure conditions rather than a fixed schedule for every property.

Can stamped concrete be installed over existing concrete?

In some situations, a decorative concrete overlay can be applied over an existing slab. The existing concrete needs to be evaluated first because significant movement, structural cracking, deterioration, or an unstable base can affect whether an overlay is appropriate. A damaged slab should not simply be covered without addressing the underlying problem.

Highly glossy surface treatments may become more slippery when wet, so slip resistance should be considered when selecting the finish.

How should I maintain my concrete?

How often should stamped concrete be resealed?

Can pressure washing damage concrete?
